about Jan Scott, women's life coach
Jan's approach conveys her humanness and warmth, her enthusiasm and generosity. RP, Buxton
I have, through personal experience and in my professional life, become passionate about our individual potential to make changes, move on and create the very best life for ourselves. Here's why.
As a young woman I got very stuck for many years; I was low in self-esteem and confidence and seriously doubted whether I could achieve in any area of my life.
Like most women, I used a lot of intuition and tuning into my gut instincts to bring up my three children. I made so many mistakes, but despite that they have all grown into fabulous adults.
When I started to believe in my own potential in other areas of my life, the floodgates really opened.
I wish I'd known then what I know now; I could have taken control and lived my life to the full much sooner than I did.
In my late 30s I took a brave step into the unknown and joined a community percussion band (Cragg Vale Gamelan). I had never played music in my life; it was terrifying at first but before long I was able to play with confidence and really contribute something to the overall sound.
I'd left school with a handful of very low grade GCEs. When I finally went to college aged 39 I found I LOVED studying and achieved a first class BA (specialising in Gender Issues and in the Arts) then an MA in Women's Studies.
I then spent several years in Further Education teaching adults, specifically women who were eager to return to education, but not sure if they could do it. That was so rewarding and the students were extraordinary and inspirational, defying their own (and often their families') expectations of themselves, to achieve their dreams.
I first worked with women who wanted to change their lives way back in 1994. The vast majority of my life coaching clients have been women facing mid-life changes and transitions (though I have coached some fab men, in fact I still do!).
One of the biggest transitions I've faced in recent years has been that of becoming a grandmother. You can read about that on my Groovy Granny site.
something that used to be a secret:
I also know from my own experience just how potent is the realisation of that little dream we've harboured since childhood. For me it was singing, an intensely private desire. When, in my late thirties, I met my partner, a professional musician, I couldn't bring myself to sing in front of him for several years.
Then one day I took a deep breath and gave it a go. I went on to sing backing vocals in a soul band for 9 years and have even sung solo in front of 500 people. Now I belong to a chamber choir (The Hepton Singers). I'm never going to make my name as a singer, but the realisation of my much-suppressed life dream gave me the power to change many other aspects of my life: I lost 2.5 stone during the year after I started singing, began to work out regularly, took up walking and now have my own, thriving, life coaching practice.
For me, the most creative part of my life started when I was almost 40 - and it just gets better and better.
